A Tribute to the Past...
ST.Paul's Hr.Sec.School today a Prestigious School in Salem has travelled a long way in the education ministry. It has emerged with its holistic approach from an unlimited vision that was conceived by a great missionary.
Most.Rev.Dr.Henry Pruniyar the First Bishop of Salem. His Excellency has started St.Theresa's Orphanage with 49 Students in Namakkal to cater to the needs of Children of his mission area. ITI education was given to them in the beginning years.
When the Bishop had shifted his residence from Namakkal to Salem in 1932 the orphanage also was shifted in 1936 near his residence at Maravanery in Salem .For their School education the inmates of St.Theresa's orphanage were going to LIttle Flower High School,4 Roads, Salem . As there rose some practical difficulties the Bishop had planned to start a school in Maravanery near his residence .
Thus. St.Theresal Primary school with 2 teachers and 52 students was started in 1939 Mr.I.Antony was the Headmaster of this school from its inception till 03.08.1968 His commitment and dedicated service was the potential seed and strong foundation on which the pioneer fathers had planned for the growth and development of this school from time to time .
In those days the people were under the darkness of illiteracy, economic backwardness and in social inequality. So this school had shown the rays of hope to so many poor and less privileged. Year by year the strength of the school increased steadily. With great effort the school was upgraded to a higher Elementary level in 1948 by the then Bishop of Salem. Most.Rev.Dr.V.S.Selvanather. In 1954
Rev.Fr.S.C.Sebastian the manager of schools had built four class rooms with a concrete roof.
There is a remarkable and quotable connection between the visit of His Holiness Pope Paul VI and our school. In 1964 the Pope made his Apostolic Visit to India. So to commemorate this great historical event the school management had decided to name St.Theresal Higher Elementary as St.Paul's High after the Patron of pope in 1965. Thus from then on this school is being called as St.Paul's.
On that auspicious day 17.07.1965 our beloved and honourable Chief Minister Dr.C.N.Annadurai was in our school campus to take Part in the inauguration and blessing of the old block. It was a precious and unforgettable moment that Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in our midst and hailing this institution as � Arivalayam' in salem.
Rev.Fr. Arul Rozario was the first Priest Headmaster of upgraded St.Paul's High school from 17.07.1965 to 20.06.1977. He worked tirelessly. His orduous efforts and his impressive pulsating enthusiasm has brought tremendous development in every sphere of St.Paul's. He is a glowing spark radiating everyone's heart till these days.
St.Paul's High School was further upgraded as Higher Secondary School in 1979 at the Headship of Rev.Fr.Dominique. He was headmaster from 21.06.1977 to 02.07.1984.
With the blessings and support of Most.Rev.Dr.Michacl Bosco Duraisamy the Bishop of Salem he was able to put up the new building for the school. Rev.Fr. Dominique was an authentic personality with practical flexibility. His dedicated service and wisdom took St.Paul's to a great hight.
Rev.Fr.A.Thomas assisted Rev.Fr.Dominique and succeeded him as headmaster and served in that capacity from 03/07/1984 to 04/06/ 1990.During his time the 1st floor of new building and front side compound wall were constructed. He got the Government approval for the English medium section. His single minded commitment and hard work disciplined the school and contributed much for the overall development of the students. The following Rev.Fathers assisted Rev.Fr.Thomas and later some of them became headmasters in this school .

Rev.Fr.Arulappan succeded Rev.Fr.Thomas and was headmaster from 05/06/1990 to 01/06/2000 .He was a man of modern concepts and innovative thinking. His positive vibrations accelerated the minds of the students and brought many fold harvest in education, sports, extracurricular and co-curricular activities. His wide and cordial relationship with public and high officials helped him in his administration to achieve great things in St.Paul's. The school campus had put up with new and elegant look which was very conducive for better learning .During his period Basket ball court, 2000 lab building were constructed. He encouraged the frequent entry of children to science lab and library even from Sixth Standard onwards. He opened the garden Library for extra reading and learning in an open air with greenery .He introduced computer learning .The students achievement in the field of Games and sports were commentable in his time.
Rev.Fr.A.Amirtharaj was assistant from 05.06.1990 to 03.06.1992 to Fr.Arulappan.
Rev.Fr.C.Gabriel succeded Fr.Arulappan on 02/06/2000 and headed the school upto 09/06/2004 .He toiled very hard for the good of the school. Salem Tamil Teachers Association awarded St.Paul's as "the Best School" in his time .He put up Botany lab and also the examination control room connecting the new building with old building.
Fr.D.Madalaimuthu assisted Fr.Gabriel from 01.06.2000 to 02.06.2005.
Rev.Fr.K.JohnJoseph served in this school as headmaster from 10/06/20004 to 04/06/2008. He tried to introduce more electronic devices to make teaching and learning easy and interesting. Many computers and Audio - Visual equipment were bought by him. Purified 'Aqua' water system, Solor energy light posts were installed he did his best for the growth of this school in every way.
Rev.Fr.M.Zacharias was headmaster from 05/06/2008 to 20/07/2010. He was a man of principles and a strict disciplinarian. He has a reputation for being tough and uncompromising .He never yielded even to the powers of high officials. He always fought for justice and for the lawful rights of an individual and of an institution .He even stood before the court of law and won many cases for his favours. He made English learning easy and interesting by providing the English language laboratory in the school.
He renovated the whole school building and laid the weathering course to all the building in the school and Hostel campus. Electrification and sound system were also renewed. The school was marching towards successes with strict discipline in every way.
Due to cancer his death was so sudden that on 20/07/2010 he had gone to his eternal reward .May his soul rest in peace.
The Present headmaster Rev.Fr.S.Sebastian took charge of the school after the death of Rev.Fr.M.Zacharias on 28/07/2010.To keep the school building neat and clean white washing was done. A good and decent Toilet facility was provided for the boarding children, compound wall renovation of H.M. Office room and H.M.Personal room, Biology lab were some of the works done recently. Now planning for meaningful celebration of the School 'Golden Jubilee' is on with the support of the former present students, teachers and welwishers. Finally, we are happy, Privileged and proud of being a member today in this prestigious institution during this 'Golden Jubilee' Year. We are all committed to work for the school so that it reaches its zenith of glory in the coming years in its multifarious activities.
